Indian Rowing: Gaining International Momentum
Rowing has been an established water sport in India, but it gained significant momentum following India’s recent success at the 2024 Asian Rowing Championships in South Korea. The Indian team, led by Prithvi Singh and Ananya Sharma, secured silver in the lightweight double sculls event, marking one of the country’s best performances in international rowing.
The Rowing Federation of India (RFI) has been focusing on increasing the sport’s reach by setting up rowing camps across the country. Notably, the Indian Army has contributed significantly to the sport, producing some of India’s top rowers. Rowing programs in states like West Bengal, Kerala, and Maharashtra are also growing, with increased youth participation and state-level competitions.
India’s natural waterways, like the backwaters of Kerala and the rivers of West Bengal, provide perfect training grounds for rowers. The RFI is now working with international rowing bodies to bring advanced training techniques and equipment to India. The focus is on preparing for future Olympic Games, with a clear plan to make rowing one of India’s most successful water sports.
